{"id":1374,"date":"2012-12-22T06:48:28","date_gmt":"2012-12-22T14:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/?p=1374"},"modified":"2013-08-10T23:08:25","modified_gmt":"2013-08-11T06:08:25","slug":"markets-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/?p=1374","title":{"rendered":"Markets in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Visiting markets is always a fun way to mix in with locals and tourists alike. \u00a0We tried to visit a few during our stay in London, but with so many other attractions on our list, we barely made a dent. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/shopping\/london-markets\" target=\"_blank\">Time Out London<\/a> has information about many of the markets &#8211; check it out before your visit!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boroughmarket.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Borough Market<\/a>\u00a0is open for lunch Monday-Wednesday, but the market is in full force on Thursday-Saturday (we visited on a Thursday). \u00a0We took the tube to the London Bridge station and walked around the area before entering the nearby market. \u00a0Unfortunately we ate lunch before we got there &#8211; the sausage stall near one of the entrances of the market smelled delicious. \u00a0Definitely plan on buying food from one of the many stalls and eating lunch there. \u00a0The only negative is that there wasn&#8217;t much seating, but with something like a sausage, you can walk around while you eat. \u00a0We did manage to save room for a blueberry tart &#8211; one of the dessert stalls was handing out samples and we needed more than that small taste. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1429\" title=\"Dessert Stall at Borough Market\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London0724-500x333.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London0724-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London0724-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London0724-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Dessert stall at Borough Market<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The majority of the stalls were occupied by food vendors. \u00a0Aside from lunch and dessert foods, we saw cheeses, spices, meats, seafood, veggies, fruits, nuts, and more. \u00a0Before we left, we were tempted by the caramel, cinnamon-apple smell of hot mulled cider. \u00a0We each ordered the drink and we were surprised at how strong (alcoholic) it was. \u00a0It was still good, especially after the initial sip, but the sweet smell threw us off. \u00a0Do visit the Borough Market, do plan to eat lunch (and dessert) while you&#8217;re there, and do shop around and enjoy the stalls! \u00a0You will not regret it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London1028.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1434 alignleft\" title=\"Portobello Market, Notting Hill\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London1028-500x333.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London1028-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London1028-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London1028-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Portobello Market, Notting Hill<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.portobelloroad.co.uk\/the-market\/\" target=\"_blank\">Portobello Road Market<\/a> is another one not to miss. \u00a0It&#8217;s located in the colorful Notting Hill neighborhood and the line of stalls seems endless. \u00a0While the market is open Monday-Saturday, Saturday is the full market day, with antique stalls and other stalls selling a\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London1035.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1436\" title=\"Portobello Market Stalls\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London1035-333x500.jpg\" width=\"233\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London1035-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/London1035-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a>variety of goods. \u00a0Unfortunately for us, it was raining all day Saturday, but we didn&#8217;t want to miss the excitement. \u00a0We browsed through stalls and stores and managed to ignore the rain until the food stalls opened around 10am (we got there early to try to avoid the crowds, but it was still crowded). \u00a0We tried a hodgepodge of food &#8211; greek appetizers, bruschetta, and a warm cheddar &amp; leek quiche. \u00a0The food was cheap and quick, and we quickly snacked while trying to stay dry. \u00a0The Portobello Market is huge compared to Borough Market, so if you have time, plan to spend at least a few hours browsing the shops and stalls. \u00a0Arrive early (to beat some of the crowds) and stay for an early lunch to get the most out of your visit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I wish we had been able to spend more time at both markets (and even better &#8211; if we had been able to use some of the fresh food to cook our own meal!), but it&#8217;s something to look forward to on our next trip to London. \u00a0Definitely plan a visit to at least one of the markets. \u00a0It&#8217;s a great way to spend time between museums, enjoy a tasty snack, and maybe find a souvenir or two!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Visiting markets is always a fun way to mix in with locals and tourists alike. \u00a0We tried to visit a few during our stay in London, but with so many other attractions on our list, we barely made a dent. &hellip;
