{"id":1825,"date":"2013-09-26T07:31:22","date_gmt":"2013-09-26T14:31:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/?p=1825"},"modified":"2013-10-31T20:47:35","modified_gmt":"2013-11-01T03:47:35","slug":"pio-pio-a-preview-of-peru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/?p=1825","title":{"rendered":"Pio Pio: A Preview of Peru"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After\u00a0searching for a late-night option for our post-theater dinner, we decided that we couldn&#8217;t resist a sneak preview of Peruvian food. \u00a0 Enter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piopio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pio Pio<\/a>, a trendy Peruvian eatery in the Hell&#8217;s Kitchen neighborhood. \u00a0(What a difference a few blocks makes! \u00a0We walked through Times Square, which was packed with people. \u00a0About a 5-10 minute walk to the west brought us to Hell&#8217;s Kitchen with empty streets.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0237.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1933\" alt=\"Pio Pio, New York\" src=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0237-500x333.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0237-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0237-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0237-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was in love when we first sat down and I tried the green dipping sauce (yes, before any of the food came out). \u00a0The sauce was addicting and perfect on every dish. \u00a0I single-handedly emptied our bowl of the sauce before the main course came out. \u00a0Luckily the waiter brought more over, which was demolished before the end of the meal. \u00a0I asked him what this special green sauce was, and all I got was that it&#8217;s a mayo-based sauce with jalape\u00f1os. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t particularly spicy, but it was creamy and delicious!<\/p>\n<p>I was thrilled to try a few dishes that I had already heard about (some are written about here):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>papa rellena: deep fried mashed potato stuffed with meat sauce, served with salsa criolla.\u00a0 The ground beef was juicy and tender, and tasted similar to Tex-Mex seasoning I&#8217;ve tasted in the past.\u00a0 The dish was delicious, and it&#8217;s something that might be a safer option for someone who is nervous about trying new foods.\u00a0 None of the flavors were too different than foods we are accostomed to in the US (at least in the west!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0251.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1931\" alt=\"Papa Rellena, Pio Pio, New York\" src=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0251-500x333.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0251-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0251-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0251-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>causa de cangrejo: cold mashed potato cake filled with avocado and crab meat (there was also an option for chicken). \u00a0It&#8217;s like a Peruvian California (sushi) roll &#8211; with potato wrapped around inside of rice. \u00a0Oh, and the green sauce instead of soy sauce for dipping.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0242.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1873\" alt=\"Causa de Cangrejo, Pio Pio, New York\" src=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0242-500x333.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0242-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0242-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0242-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cebiche mixto: fresh corvina, shrimp octopus and calamari marinated in lime juice and mixed with red onions, cilantro, and rocato hot pepper, served with sweet potato and choclo corn. \u00a0For me, this wasn&#8217;t <em>as good<\/em> as I expected it to be &#8211; the cilantro definitely overpowered the dish and I was hoping for larger chunks of fish (perhaps I was wanting tiradito). \u00a0However, I was very excited to try the choclo corn, which was toasted and similar to large corn nuts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0238.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1872\" alt=\"Ceviche, Pio Pio, New York\" src=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0238-500x333.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0238-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0238-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0238-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>lomo saltado: tender beef saute with tomatoes and onions in a soy sauce, served with rice and french fries.\u00a0 To my surprise, the french fries came mixed in with the meat and veggies, while the rice was served off to the side.\u00a0 I was surprised by the Asian flavors in the dish.\u00a0 I have read that there is a lot of Asian influence in Peruvian cuisine, especially Chinese, so it will be interesting to see if this hold true when we try the dish in Peru!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0254.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1874\" alt=\"Lomo Saltado, Pio Pio, New York\" src=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0254-500x333.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0254-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0254-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0254-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1935 alignleft\" alt=\"Pisco Sour, Pio Pio, New York\" src=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0236-333x500.jpg\" width=\"163\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0236-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC0236-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 163px) 100vw, 163px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t resist a taste (or two) of the pisco sour &#8211; a cocktail made from pisco (a grape brandy), citrus, sugar, egg whites, and Angostura bitters.
