{"id":916,"date":"2012-11-15T11:51:37","date_gmt":"2012-11-15T19:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/?p=916"},"modified":"2013-05-06T12:54:46","modified_gmt":"2013-05-06T19:54:46","slug":"orejas-y-futbol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/?p=916","title":{"rendered":"Orejas y F\u00fatbol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Evenings in Madrid enthralled us. \u00a0On the warm fall nights during our visit, we discovered swarms of energetic people, spirited music, and an electrifying atmosphere. \u00a0This jubilation \u00a0 apexed around Plaza de Santa Ana, the heart of Madrid&#8217;s nightlife scene. \u00a0It was here that we began our culinary adventure through Madrid&#8217;s tapas offerings.<\/p>\n<p>Our first tapas stop in Madrid was a planned one. \u00a0As we do in preparation for all our trips, we repeatedly watched\u00a0<em><\/em>relevant<em> Rick Steves<\/em> episodes prior to our departure. \u00a0A scene capturing Rick eating saut\u00e9ed pig ears in his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ricksteves.com\/tvr\/madridrse301_descr.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Madrid episode<\/a>\u00a0especially intrigued us. \u00a0Accordingly, we followed his lead and ordered a raci\u00f3n of\u00a0<em>oreja<\/em>\u00a0(ears) at the Orjea de Oro bar, along with two glasses of the Galician ribeiro wine (\u20ac1 each!), and an order of patatas bravas. \u00a0The taste of the ears was recognizable&#8211;not too different from bacon&#8211;but the texture was wild. \u00a0Just like one might expect, the dish was &#8220;cartilagy&#8221; and far from tender. \u00a0The pieces of ear served already cut-up, so luckily minimal chewing was required. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/PortEsp2715.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-898\" title=\"Orejas de Oro\" src=\"http:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/PortEsp2715-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/PortEsp2715-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/PortEsp2715-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/suitcasejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/PortEsp2715-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Our oreja raci\u00f3n at Oreja de Oro<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To our chagrin, instead of a colorful local, we found ourselves sitting next to a fellow <em>Rick Steves<\/em> aficionado. \u00a0He was similarly following Rick&#8217;s trail through Madrid&#8217;s tapas offerings, but could not muster the courage to order the orjeas. \u00a0He had no shame communicating with the English-speaking bartender in Spanish that was nothing short of abysmal. \u00a0Despite the lack of local flavor and toughness of the orejas, we do not our regret our experience.<\/p>\n<p>Anxious to find an authentic local experience, we sought out a tapas bar playing that night&#8217;s Real Madrid f\u00fatbol match. \u00a0After surveying several options, we found a spot called La Venta de Farracas just a few blocks away with plenty of buzz and an open table. \u00a0We ordered traditional tapas, all of which we had sampled in other Spanish cities&#8211;croquettes, fried calamari, and more patatas bravas. \u00a0I ordered a couple of Spanish beers to accompany the food. \u00a0The food itself was decent, but the real highlight was the f\u00fatbol game. \u00a0All eyes were fixed on a large big screen television in the back of the establishment. \u00a0Unlike the modern American sports bar, with dozens of digitial high definition televisions, this spot had one television, with a noisy analog signal. \u00a0This did not distract the crowd, however.
