California Central Coast: A Relaxing Weekend Getaway

Central Coast Map

We just returned from a great weekend trip to the California Central Coast.  We spent Friday and Saturday nights in a house my parents rented just above Edna Valley, a wine producing region just south of San Luis Obispo.  The area has a lot to offer–probably one of the best year-round climates around, beautiful picturesque landscapes, an excellent beach, and amazing seafood.  It’s also a little hard to get to for most people (the nearest major airport is over 80 miles away), which might make it a little less touristy than other locations in California.  Still, there were plenty of crowds on the beach and at the wharf in Morro Bay.

The undisputed highlight of the trip was actually the rental house.  We choose the house after researching for a place to stay (a little bit last minute) on vbro.com.  Renting a place can be cheaper for couples traveling together.  Often times, rentals are especially attractive when the rental period is at least a week.  We found a great looking place that was competitive with hotel prices for just 4 nights (my parents stayed the other two alone), even after considering the cleaning fee. The house we rented was called Casita Las Brisas, and is situated above the Edna Valley. I included a snapshot below of the view from just outside the house.

Edna Valley from Casita Las Brisas

In the view from the house, you can see the Nine Sisters in the distance, a chain of volcanic peaks and hills in the area.  In the foreground is a sample of the many flowers that were planted around the house to attract hummingbirds.  I’ve never seen so many hummingbirds in my life!

During our short stay there, we managed to cover the area fairly well.  We started our first day off with wine tasting at Wolff Vineyards in the Edna Valley below our rental.  We were pleasantly surprised with their “Old Vine” Chardonnay, which is actually grown without irrigation.

We then travelled north to Morro Bay.  We were very surprised by the large crowds at Morro Bay, but with the help of the local Tourist Information office, we found an excellent eatery in Tognazzini’s Dockside Restaurant.  They had plenty of local fish on the menu, and the Halibut Cheeks Picatta they served as a Special when we visited was very memorable.  Yum!

Relaxing at Our Casual B&B Wine Bar in Montepulciano, Tuscany

One of our favorite memories from our Greece/Italy Honeymoon in 2011 was the time we spent in the wine bar at Locanda San Francesco, our bed & breakfast in Montepulciano, Tuscany.  Check-in for the B&B was actually in the wine bar, and we were greeted with a complimentary drink and snack when we arrived.  The wine list at the bar features a selection of local wines, most notably the famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.  There is an option to enjoy a glass, a bottle, or even a tasting flight.  We loved the wine, but the ambiance is what is most memorable.  We not only returned for the experience the night of our arrival, but also each of the following four nights.

The wine bar includes a small bar as well as several tables, armchairs, and coffee tables. We usually opted for the comfortable arm chairs.  The bar’s clientele included guests from the 4 rooms at the B&B, other tourists visiting Montepulciano, and several locals.  Small snacks, such as nuts and olives, were served with each drink order.  There was also a small food menu served during lunch and the evenings.  We actually opted for dinner at the Wine Bar one of the nights, and were very satisfied with the quality of food. Possible Lisbon Side Trip: Sintra

On a recent morning, I opened a Portugal guidebook we are using to plan our trip to Lisbon to a random page with a picture of a quintessential castle.  It reminded me of one of our favorite adventures in Umbria during our Honeymoon–exploring the  Rocca Maggiore in Assisi.  The castle described on the page was in Sintra, Portugal.  To my surprise, upon further reading, I discovered that Sintra is a short 35 minute train ride from Lisbon, where we will be staying.

Sintra Moorish Castle

Sintra’s Moorish Castle’s appearance conforms to many storybook stereotypes of medieval castles.

Not only is Sintra home to the Moorish Castle, but also the National Palace (a historic royal residence that is still used for receptions today) and the Pena Palace (a “fantasy” castle built in the style of King Ludwig’s famous Neuschwanstein castle in Germany.  Other sightseeing options include caves at Quinta de Regaleria and exotic gardens at Monserrate.  With the LisboaCard that we are planning on buying, admission to the National Palace is free, and discounts are available on admission to the Pena Palace, Moorish Castle, and Monserrate gardens.  The train trip (usually only 4 Euros round-trip) is also included with the LisboaCard. Direct Online Booking of RENFE Spain Train Tickets

Renfe LogoIn our past two trips to Europe, we have taken two different approaches to train travel in Europe: buying a Eurail pass or buying tickets in person once arriving in the country.  For our upcoming trip to Spain, we are taking a new approach by booking the tickets directly from the train operator (RENFE in Spain).  I wanted to share our experience, because we are realizing considerable savings, in addition to the added convenience of having digital copies of our tickets that can be printed before we even depart the United States, allowing us to directly board the train before departure.

The original plan for our trip was to buy 3-day Eurail passes.  In comparison to the normal train fares, this seemed like a good value at $219 per person for 2nd class.  Unfortunately, with rail passes, reservation fees are often required for the faster trains.  We plan on taking the high speed AVE from Barcelona to Sevilla and the ALTARIA from Granada to Madrid, both which require reservation fees (10 Euros and 6.50 Euros).  Only one planned trip, a direct from Sevilla to Granada, did not have a fee for pass-holders.  At today’s bargain USD/Euro exchange rates, we figured our train travel expenses would be about $240 per person.  This fit our budget, but I was concerned with procuring a reservation for the Barcelona-Sevilla trip.  There is only one direct AVE from Barcelona to Sevilla in the morning.  Although we had no issues getting reservations on the past trip, seats are limited for pass-holders, and I didn’t want to risk waiting till we arrived in Spain to make a reservation on a popular train with few back-up options.  The only option for getting reservations for pass-holders ahead of time is through the USA-friendly website RailEurope.com, but they charge additional shipping fees that drive-up the cost.  I started looking for alternatives. Independence Day Fireworks in Solvang, California

Kristin and I are in Solvang, California, one of our favorite destinations in California.  Kristin just blogged about the plans for this trip in late June.  We returned to Solvang for the third time in two years because we enjoy the unique Danish ambiance, excellent wine, and temperate climate.  Although our vacation was planned starting on the 4th of July to take advantage of turning a midweek holiday into a 5-day weekend, Independence Day celebrations were not a priority in our trip scheduling.  We knew we would likely see fireworks, but too our surprise, the 4th of July Celebration and Fireworks Show in Solvang was a trip highlight!

The show is put on each year (this is the 19th annual) by the Rotary Club of the Santa Ynez Valley.  Admission to the event is $5 for adults, and free for children 5 & under and for service members.  In addition to fireworks at 9pm, gates open at 1pm with plenty of all-American food booths, live entertainment, games for children, and raffles.  The event truly has a “small town” America feel, despite the many tourists that visit the area.
